What Is Rose Gold?

How Should You Clean Rose Gold Jewelry?

Rose gold jewelry generally does not require aggressive household chemicals for routine cleaning.

For pieces that are suitable for home washing, start by gently wiping away skin oils, sweat and surface dust with a soft dry cloth.

If the metal, gemstones and construction are suitable for water-based cleaning, lukewarm water with a small amount of mild dish soap and a soft brush can be used gently before the piece is thoroughly rinsed and dried.

GIA recommends warm water, mild dish soap, a soft brush and a soft lint-free cloth as simple cleaning options for many types of jewelry that are suitable for home cleaning.

However, jewelry containing pearls, opals, turquoise, treated gemstones, adhesive settings or other delicate materials may require different care.

When you are unsure, check the care instructions for the individual piece or have it cleaned professionally.

Can You Clean Rose Gold With Toothpaste?

We do not recommend it.

Jewelry does not become safer or cleaner simply because it is scrubbed harder. Abrasive products can create scratches, and repeated abrasion can be particularly unsuitable for plated or finished surfaces.

For that reason, we do not recommend using toothpaste, sandpaper, rough brushes or other abrasive household products to clean jewelry.

Can You Use Bleach or Ammonia on Rose Gold?

Bleach, ammonia and homemade mixtures containing aggressive household chemicals should not be treated as universal rose gold cleaners.

GIA notes that chlorine bleach can pit or damage gold alloys, while ammonia-containing cleaners may be too harsh for certain delicate gems or vintage jewelry.

We therefore do not recommend old-fashioned DIY recipes involving bleach, baking soda and salt as a general jewelry-cleaning method.

With jewelry, gentle cleaning is often more appropriate than aggressive chemical cleaning.

Can You Heat Rose Gold to Remove Discoloration?

Do not use an open flame or high heat as a DIY jewelry-cleaning method.

High heat and sudden temperature changes can damage certain gemstones, while jewelry may also contain soldered components, finishes or other structures that respond differently to heat.

GIA likewise warns that excessive heat and sudden temperature changes can damage some gemstones.

If your jewelry develops white marks, dark spots or discoloration that cannot be removed through gentle cleaning, professional inspection is preferable to heating, sanding or aggressive polishing.

Why Does My Rose Gold Jewelry Look Darker?

Looking darker does not necessarily mean the rose gold itself has faded.

During everyday wear, jewelry comes into contact with skin oils, sweat, skincare, sunscreen, perfume, cosmetics and dust.

As residue builds up across the metal or gemstones, the piece may reflect less light and appear duller.

It depends on the actual material and the care instructions for the specific product.

However, Water Resistant does not mean that we recommend keeping jewelry immersed in water for long periods.

As part of our everyday jewelry-care guidance, we recommend removing jewelry when showering or exercising and minimizing contact with products such as perfume, hairspray and cosmetics.

A useful distinction is:

Occasional contact with water is not the same as prolonged water exposure.

Removing jewelry before swimming, using household cleaning products or prolonged water exposure remains a sensible care habit.

How Should You Care for Rose Gold Jewelry Every Day?

Good jewelry care is usually less about performing an occasional “deep clean” and more about reducing unnecessary everyday wear.

Apply skincare, perfume, cosmetics and hair products first, allow them to dry, and then put on your jewelry.
